Getting Started

Open Strolla and tap Start Walk. The standard walk is Japanese interval walking: 3 minutes of brisk walking, then 3 minutes of easy walking, five times — 30 minutes in all. Put in your earbuds (or keep the speaker on), lock your iPhone, put it in your pocket and walk. Strolla tells you out loud when to speed up and when to ease off, so you never need to look at the screen.

New to the method? Japanese walking, explained covers the protocol, how brisk "brisk" is, and the research behind it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Strolla keep coaching when my iPhone is locked?

Yes — that is what it is built for. During a walk, Strolla keeps a silent audio track playing between cues, which is how iOS lets an app keep running and speaking after the screen locks. Each cue is spoken at its interval boundary whether the screen is on or off. If a phone call or Siri interrupts, Strolla resumes its audio when the interruption ends, and the walk's timing continues throughout.

Will Strolla stop my music or podcast?

No. Your music keeps playing for the whole walk. When a cue is due, the music dips for the moment the cue is spoken, then returns to full volume. Spoken audio such as a podcast pauses for the cue and then continues.

I can't hear the cues. What should I check?

How fast is "brisk"?

Brisk is a pace that feels somewhat hard: you are breathing noticeably harder and could speak only in short phrases. Easy is a relaxed pace that lets you recover. The right pace is personal and changes as you get fitter. There is more on this in How brisk is brisk?

How does Strolla work with Apple Health?

If you allow it, Strolla saves each walk you finish to Apple Health as a Walking workout, so it counts toward your activity. You can change this at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Strolla. Strolla never needs Health to coach you; every walk is also kept in Strolla's own history.

How do I use Strolla on Apple Watch?

The Apple Watch app is part of Strolla Premium. To install it, open the Watch app on your iPhone, scroll to Available Apps, and tap Install next to Strolla. On your wrist, Strolla runs your walk as a workout, follows the same interval plan as your iPhone, and taps your wrist at every boundary. Walks you finish on your watch appear in your iPhone's history.

Can I change the interval lengths?

The standard walk (3 + 3 minutes, five sets) is free. With Strolla Premium you can set your own rhythm — the brisk and easy lengths and the number of sets — in Strolla's Settings. Your watch follows the same plan.

What does Strolla Premium include?

Strolla Premium adds trends across your walk history, the Apple Watch app, and your own interval rhythm. The standard walk, the spoken cues, your walk history and Apple Health saving stay free. Premium is available monthly, yearly, or as a one-time lifetime purchase; see the Terms of Use for details.

I bought Premium but it isn't showing. What do I do?

Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID you used to buy, then open Strolla's Settings and tap Restore Purchases. A new Apple Watch picks up Premium from your iPhone once the two have connected.

A Note on Safety

Strolla is a walking coach, not a medical device, and it does not give medical advice. Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you are pregnant, have a heart, lung or joint condition, or take medication. Walk at an effort that is right for you, and stop and seek medical help if you feel chest pain, dizziness or other pain. Keep your volume low enough to hear traffic. Strolla is an independent app and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Shinshu University or its researchers. The full text is in the Terms of Use.
